Teenage boys charged with murder after friend killed by neighbor firing warning shot

Four teenagers were breaking into remote fishing camps on Gravine Island, Alabama last April when some nearby neighbors came to see what was going on. The three neighbors, William Hearn, Larry Duncan, and Lonnie Davison got their guns and boated over to the cabin where they had heard noise. Seeing the teenagers they told them to stop and stay where they were.
Hearn and Duncan fired warning shots into the ground. One of the bullets hit 17-year-old Summer Moody who was hiding in the bushes. Summer was shot in the head and died of her injuries ten days later.
Last week the District Attorney announced that a grand jury had indicted the three other teens, 18-year-old Scott Bryd, 18-year-old Dylan Tyree, and 18-year-old Daniel Parnell, for murder. The three were also charged with felony burglary.
In a news release the District Attorney stated:
But for the actions of these three young men - who were engaging in armed burglaries and who acted aggressively when caught - Summer Moody would be with us today.
No charges were filed against the man who actually fired the shot that killed Summer. However, Summer's family has filed suit against the three men, as well as against the Alabama Marine police. According to the family lawyer:
The family is upset and a little angry at the situation. They felt all along that there were two sets of offenders on that particular morning. One were the boys in some place they shouldn't have been and committing a crime that would be up to a jury or judge to decide what the appropriate punishment is. Ths other set of offenders are the shooters who armed themselves up and came down and interjected themselves into this situation where these teenagers were."

Close combat class firearm instructor unintentionally shoots instructor during training class

Former Russian soldier and current firearms trainer and video host Sonny Puzikas was teaching a "close combat class" at the Texas Defensive Shooting Academy in Ferris, Texas.
According to the founder of the academy, the range "allows shooters the ability to shoot the way they want, without the stringent rules imposed like most other ranges."
The class was being held in a section of the range called "the city", a live fire area with multiple rooms and targets. This particular class had a three room shoot house, each room with multiple targets. Students were taken through the house one at a time and used live ammunition to shoot at the targets.
The last students were going through the shoot house and it was getting dark. According to Sonny:
"I knew the last shooter was going inside to shoot. I heard the shooting shop. I did not hear shooting for a while. I finished saying good-bye so I decided to make a run in the house before I left. I made the statement, 'I am going to do a run' and then I heard a person standing behind me respond to me saying, 'OK' I did not turn around so I don't know who said OK to me. I, wrongfully, assumed it was clear to go. I pulled my pistol out and set up and started coming around the corner. I shot three quick shots at the far left target, then three quick shots at the far right target and then three quick shots at the close right target just insdie the room. I then heard someone say, 'You shot me.'
Sonny had unintentionally shot his assistant instructor, Gene Smithson. Smithson was shot three times, twice in the abdomen and once in the right bicep and hand. He was taken to the local hospital and is expected to survive.

59-year-old Bertrand Schroeder, of Dreher Twp., Pennsylvania, admitted that it was a "stupid thing" to get drunk and start "messing" with his rifles. While trying to unload one of the guns he unintentionally discharged the weapon and shot his wife, Donnalynn, in the neck.
Donnylynn, 51, was taken to the hospital and died during surgery.
Schroeder told police that his wfie had bought him a case of beer in the morning and that he spent most of the day drinking the beer. Deputy testing holster for defect that could cause unintentional trigger pull unintentionally shot

Deputy John Parsons, a Berks County, Pennsylvania deputy sheriff, was on the 17th floor of the Berks County Courthouse. He and another deputy were trying to determine if the service holster they used was susceptible to an unintentional trigger pull.
The sheriff had received an alert from the U.S. Marshal Service about the holster, the Blackhawk LV3 tactical holster, stating there was a possible defect. So the deputies, both firearms instructors, wanted to test the holsters.
According to a statement from the sheriff's office the two were trying to determine if the holster was susceptible to a suspect reaching inside the holster and pulling the trigger. "The objective of the training exercise was to prevent a scenario such as this from happening," said the sheriff. "During the training process, another sheriff's deputy was able to reach over and grab Deputy Parsons' weapon, at which time Deputy Parsons' gun accidentally discharged."
Before testing the holster both deputies unloaded their guns. They were unable to duplicate the unintentional trigger pull and were preparing to go back to work. Parsons reloaded his pistol but the second deputy did not realize that.
"Within a few minutes the other deputy said he figured it out and reached for Parsons' gun and it went off," said the sheriff.
Parsons, who was shot in the leg, was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. The other deputy was placed on desk duty. Both deputies were offered counseling and assistance from the union trauma support team.
The department has decided to no longer use the holsters.

Mother charged in connection with 13-year-old son's unintentional shooting of his friend

Last April, 13-year-old Elijah Yussuf, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania was home alone with his friend, 14-year-old Tyler Winstead. Elijah, who had a "striking fondness and familiarity" with his father's .22-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, was playing with the gun. He turned towards Tyler and unintentionally discharged the weapon.
The bullet struck Tyler in the chest and punctured his lung and heart. Tyler died of his injuries.
Elijah's mother, Angelina Deabreu, helped cover up the incident. She hid the gun and perpetuated Elijah's claim of a drive-by shooting. Deabreu was charged last week with hiding the gun, destroying evidence, and lying to investigators.
The district attorney stated that Elijah's relationship with the gun underscored a child-like curiosity fostered by ignorant parenting and a disregard within his home for standard gun-safety measures.

All 9 people injured in Empire State Building shooting were wounded by police

A police investigation has shown that all nine of the people injured in Friday's shooting outside of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire.
The incident began Friday morning when 58-year-old Jeffrey Johnson waited outside his former place of employment and shot and killed his former manager, 41-year-old Steve Ercolino.
Johnson then calmly walked away, around the corner of the Empire State Building to Fifth Avenue. A construction worker who saw the shooting altered police. Two police officers confronted Johnson and when he pulled out a gun they opened fire, killing him.
One officer shot nine rounds while the other shot seven. In addition to killing Johsnon, nine bystanders were injured. Three of the victims suffered gunshot wounds and the other six were hit by fragments. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "It appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police."
Six of the wounded were treated and released from the hospital while three of the wounded remain hospitalized.
As Gail Collins writes in her Saturday column,"This isn't surprising; it's only in movies that people are good shots during a violent encounter." Collins continues:
"And these are people trained for this kind of crisis. The moral is that if a lunatic starts shooting, you will not be made safer if your fellow average citizens are carrying concealed weapons.

We are never going to have a sane national policy on guns until the gun advocates give up on the fantasy that the best protection against armed psychopaths bent on random violence is regular people with loaded pistols on their belts."
